Parenting is both an art and Skill:

gurur na sa syāt sva-jano na sa syāt   pitā na sa syāj jananī na sā syāt

daivaṁ na tat syān na patiś ca sa syān  na mocayed yaḥ samupeta-mṛtyum

 

One who cannot deliver his dependents from the path of repeated birth and death should never become a spiritual master, a father, a husband, a mother or a worshipable demigod.(SB: 5.5.18 )

 

atha vā yoginām eva   kule bhavati dhīmatām   etad dhi durlabha-taraṁ    loke janma yad īdṛśam

Or [if unsuccessful after long practice of yoga] he takes his birth in a family of transcendentalists who are surely great in wisdom. Certainly, such a birth is rare in this world ( BG: 6.42)

 

Lalayate Panchavarshani, dasavarshani tadayate, Praptesu sodasha varse, Putram Mitram Mibarachate.

Indulge a child for the first five years of his life, for the next ten years deal firmly with the child. Once the child is sixteen, treat him as a friend. – Canakya niti

 

 

Three natural leaders:

King - overall administration, protection and inspiration.

 

Teacher - Helps to unfold the mysteries of life and world around. Helps discovering the purpose of life.

 

Parents - Gives life. Nurturing and upbringing.

 

Principles of effective relationship building with children:
 

  1. Modelling ( acting as a good role model for children to emulate)

  2. Mentoring ( guiding them as per their need and ability )

  3. Organizing ( taking care of all their needs in the best possible way)

  4. Teaching and sharing ( when they are ready for it )

 

Dharma of parents is to:

  1. Nourish

  2. Protect

  3. Equip with character, competence, capacity and consent.

  4. Engage in goodness, music, games, dovetail their nature towards spirituality.

  5. Cultural engineering
