vidya-vinaya-sampanne brahmane gavi hastini
suni caiva sva-pake ca panditah sama-darsinah
( BG 5.18 )
(The humble sages, by virtue of true knowledge, see with equal vision a learned and gentle brāhmaṇa, a cow, an elephant, a dog and a dog-eater [outcaste].)
vidya dadati vinayam vinayad yati patratam
patratvad dhanam apnoti dhanad dharmam tatah sukham
(Hitopadesa 6)
(Education makes one humble, which gives one qualification. Being qualified, one attains wealth for performing religious acts such as giving charity and performing sacrifices, which lead to happiness)
prajñānam brahma ( Aitareya Upanishad 3.3 of the Rig Veda)
Gyan is knowing the things as they are.
Vigyan is knowing why things are like that.
Pragyan is knowing what is the relationship between them.
And this leads to Adhyatmiktha (spiritual realization).
Example: Knowledge of musical instrument is Gyan. Knowing how to play it is vigyan. Then knowing how to engage for apara is Pragyan.

One who daily bows to the elders in the house and seeks their blessings, gets four things--his lifetime, learning skills, fame and power among his people and bodily strength, growing day by day.
-
Learning should be for life and living.
-
What we need is to be learned, or apply what is learning in daily life.
-
Education should not just leave one as vidya-snatak (master of learning) but reach vrata-snatak (obtain victory over his senses).
-
Education should enable one to become modest, fearless, self-reliant, courageous, intelligent and steadfast.
-
Education should lead the child to self-reliance and freedom.
-
Realizing that life should be dedicated for the service of humanity, worship of God to the fullest extent.

Four principles of education:
-
Imparted as individual, social and national goal.
-
To make self-sufficient, meaning skilled and self-learning ability.
-
To understand that work and knowledge cannot be separated.

Enable to live in harmony with nature and contended in life.
Value education help children to:
Blossoming all their pancha koshas.

Educational Philosophy
An educational system has to have a philosophy behind it and its purpose should be to elicit the best in an individual.
If the country believes in:
Capitalism them they want education to prepare future executives and administrators
Socialism them they want education to prepare future labour
Militarism them they want education to prepare narrow-patriots.
The Oriental Method: In our own country, the system of education followed in the past was a training ground for life. A student chose his master and lived his everyday life under his master's watchful eye and imbibed the spirit of his guru. This was the case, not merely with spiritual training, but, in every walk of life. Any attempt to educate the masses must include inculcation of true standards of financial, social and economic value above all things.
Varied aspects of life: Man is a complex being; we cannot divide him up into watertight compartments and develop him in stages. Education, which attends only to the intellectual development leaving aside the physical, moral and spiritual aspects, is directed towards the production of monstrous cities. If our aim is a true education we have to attend to all faculties at one and the same time. We have to develop a person physically, socially, mentally and spiritually. He has to learn an occupation, he has to learn how to live as a member of community, and he has to know how to evaluate man and matters. Unless all these are attempted, we can have no education worth the name.It is much better for the school to function under the eyes of its community. The school should be the centre of culture and the point of contact with the outside world.
